The period 1991-1995 brought important changes of water quality in the Elbe, the chief Bohemian river. Improvements of water quality came after a long period of gradual deterioration, mainly due to implementation of sewage plants at major industrial sites. However, a numbers of problems - namely communal waste management - are still beyond acceptable limits and remain challenges for future.
