Landscape Evalution of the Křivoklát Region (Application of a Method Developed by the Research Institute for Building and Architecture in Prague)

Eduard Caha

This article shows an approach of the Research Institute for Building and Architecture in Prague to the landscape evalution from the viewpoint of the recreational activites. The landscape is considered a service system one basic characteristic feature of which is the so called assortment and it can therefore be included among the civic facilities as explained in a greater detail in theoretical works of the department for housing and civic construction of the Research Institute for Building and Architecture in Prague. The aim of this article was to show how to ascertain and measure the service functions of the natural environment, i.e. to ascertain the assortment which gives us a base for the evaluation. The experimental area was chosen between the communities of Branov and Nezabudice (an area of 16 sq. km) in the region of Křivoklát which represents a tourist region. The theoretical works of the Research Institute for Building and Architecture use the following terminology. Each environment where there are performed recreational activities is composed of the basic categories, namely the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the biosphere, the atmosphere and the technosphere. The relations between the basic categories and the individual activities are described by means of matrics marked by the symbol Z. Each category of the natural environment is characterized by many properties expressed in different measures. The matrics used by many properties expressed in different measures. The matrics used for their description are marked by the letter J. Each property is measured by means of a scale of ten intervals in squares of 125 by 125 m on a map of a 1: 10 000 scale. The results of the application, i.e. the probabilities of the performance of the individual activites, the assortment of the areas, the value, the attractivity and the capacity of the landscape (in this article, the attractivity and capacity are not for technical reasons mentioned) have been obtained by means of the computer Odra 1204 on the base of a programme elaborated by P. Kraus in the ALGOL language. The choice of the properties was only a demonstrative one and the results were therefore not 100 %. The results were negatively influenced also by the quality of the matrics Z, which could not yet be properly set up by the specialists of practice. For a practical application in the town- and country planning practice it will be necessary to carry out a widely based research of the relations between the activities and the basic categories. This research is already being carried out in more working places and it would be useful if this article could contribute to a coordination of these works.
