The Isochronic Map of Bohemia for 1850 from K. Malík
Karel Malík (1892-1954) a Czech economical geographer and statistician whose work was appreciated in this Journal (vol. 1953, p. 121-123) and especially from the point of view of his studies in geography of communication in The Report of the Institute of Geography of Czechoslovak Academy of Science (vol. 1967, Number 2) devoted the most of the last year of his life to the construction of the isochronic map of Bohemia for 1850. He finished the drawing of it however he did not describe the method he applied. The paper tries to reconstruct in brevity the manner of this historical isochronic map. According to Malík's notes three maps (cartograms) were reconstructed. The final work was drawn very thoroughly to the scale of 1: 500 000. In the Atlas of Czechoslovak History (sheet 24, map h) was the map - together with analogous maps of Moravia and Slovakia drawn by the author of this paper - reproduced in colours to the very small scale of 1 : 4 Millions.
