The article deals with the recent state of pollution of the principal rivers of the North Bohemian Region in relation to their hydrological conditions, the character of the river-basins and the number of sources of pollution. The pollution of rivers depends mostly on the degree of industrialization of their river-basins, and thus even on the density of polulation, and only to a lesser degree also on the area of the basin. The most unfavourable conditions are found in the basins of the Bílina and the Lužická Nisa (Neisse), the best ones occur in those of the Jizera, the Ploučnice, and partly the Ohře (Eger). The tables which are added, show the characteristics of the different basins, and bring basic hydrological data concerning North Bohemian rivers. The schematic map has been based upon the new evaluation of the quality of water in the rivers (Czechoslovak State Norm no. 830612).
