The paper summarizes our present knowledge and presents a new hypothesis on the origin of the morphostructure of the Moravian Gate. It emphasizes, among others, the differences in the morphostructural development between its SW and NE parts. The Moravian Gate as a distinct tectonically controlled depression began to develope in the Miocene and before the Badenian. Its present major features, however, date from the post-Badenian period.
