An increasing interest in the problems of practice, namely in the problems of physical and regional planning was a significant feature in the development of Czech geography during the last decades. The advancement of applied functions of geography has been shown by a gradual integration of theoretical and applied research, by an intensive cooperation between geographical, projecting and planning institutions as well as by a remarkable increase in the number of geographers working in the regional and physical planning sphere. Especially the questions of environment and development of settlement structure and urbanization process are put through as fundamental problems in the orientation of applied research.
