The development of modern Slovak geography started in the Forties of our century. Geographers engaged in research in Slovakia exceed the number of 100. The voluminous scientific production has amounted to over 1200 papers and 70 books. The most remarkable work is the Atlas of the SSR (1980). The present trends in Slovak geography aim at a system based on the landscape research, the understanding of the developmental regularities of territorial structures, landscape potential, environmental problems, and on setting up geographical prognoses.
