Dams, earthquakes and the valley genesis

Ludvík Loyda

The author has collected much information obtained through exact geodetic measurements and geophysical methods on tectonic movements taking place in proximity of dams in different parts of the world. He brings examples of correlation between the origin of seismism and the positive as well as negative movements of blocks along fault-slopes at a change of water level in dams. In his opinion these phenomena are the best proof of the block faulting, and consequently of the tectonic origin of the valleys believed so far to be of purely erosional origin.
