The influence of power plants on agriculture in the area of Pardubice

Antonín Götz, Jiří Švec

The authors describe their studies of the influence of the SO2 exhalations produced by power plants and chemical works located in the environment of Pardubice and Hradec Králové (Pardubice Basin, Eastern Bohemia) on agriculture in the years 1969-1974. By means of a simple method (comparing the yields of products and vegetable production in areas affected by air pollution and in other areas) they found strong negative effects of air pollution on sugar beet and lucerne, and only slight effects on wheat and barley. The correlation between the distance of sources of air pollution and the intensity of negative effects is clearly evident.
