The Influence of Natural Conditions on the Environment of the Town of Plzeň

Jiří Pech, Jiří Matoušek

The authors - a geographer and a physician - characterize the biological condition of the largest industrial town in the West-Bohemian region. They study the influence of relief, water courses, climat and antropogenous factors in the Plzeňská kotlina (bassin). According to their conclusion, Plzeň has - in comparison with others large towns in the ČSSR (see Tab. 1) - very unfavourable geomorphological and bioclimatological conditions: frequent inversions of temperature, fogs decrease of annual sum of sunshine in consequence of increasing of air pollution in the space of the town. That conditions are even more deteriorated by the localization of main and largest factories and establishments (Škoda) on the Western outskirts of the town.
