25 Years of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences

Jaromír Demek

In November 1977 the Czechoslavak Academy of Sciences celebrated the 25th anniversary of its foundation. In his paper the author values this period in which the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences became a leading part in the scientific life. He mentions the main results achieved by the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in the past period, especially the leading and coordinative functions in the State Plan of Fundamental Research. Further he concentrates on the development of geography within the frame of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The main success has its origin in the foundation of the Institute of Geography of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Brno in 1963 where about 1/3 of the Czech scientific workers in geography are engaged. This Institute is today the greatest geographical workplace in the C.S.S.R. The author connects the rapid development of geography in the C.S.R. in the last 25 years with the close co-operation with geographers of socialist countries, especially with Soviet geographers.
