80 Years of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and 50 Years of Its Brno Branch

80 Years of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and 50 Years of Its Brno Branch were commemorated in Brno by a festive meeting of more than 110 geographers, members of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society, representatives of the Geographical Societies of Poland, Hungary, the GDR and Soviet geographers, representatives of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, party and government institutions, etc. during June 28 and 29, 1974. The participants were welcomed by presiding Ass. Prof. Dr. L. Mištera and after the opening speech of the oldest member of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society, JUDr. K. Vaeter (since 1920), Univ. Prof. Dr. Miloš Nosek, chairman of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society, took the floor and invited the participants to commemorate the members of the Society who lost their lives in fighting for the independence of Czechoslovak people and against fascism for free life and socialist development in our country. The participants were given a detailed report by Dr. Dušan Trávníček on the activities of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society from its foundation up to the present in which the great contribution of the Society to Czechoslovak geographical sciences and the development of our society was appreciated. The report was followed by addresses of the guests. Delegates from abroad presented to the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society the presents (publications) from the geographical societies they represented. The morning session was closed by placing diplomas to meritorious members of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society and to cooperating institutions. Some diplomas were awarded in memoriam, such as to Corresponding Member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Fr. Vitásek, Dr. Zd. Láznička and Dr. J. Dosedla. In the afternoon the meeting devoted to the celebration of 50 years of the Brno Branch of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society was opened by its chairman, Dr. J. Kousal. After the opening speech Ing. Dr. Václav Novák read the report on the activities of the Brno Branch in the passed half-century. Then an exhibition of documents to both anniversaries was opened. On June 29, the participants took part in a working meeting under presidence of Ass. Prof. Dr. J. Demek, Director of the Institute of Geography of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. During the meeting Ass. Prof. Dr. M. Macka's paper "The environment in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and tasks of geography" and Dr. A. Hynek's paper "Communist education in geography in teaching about socialist environment" were read. After ample discussion related to these topical papers the two-days meeting was closed by Dr. K. Vaeter with a sincere wish of much success in future activities of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society and its South Moravian Branch.
