Methods of Studying the Territorial Structure of Industry
The paper describes one of many aspects of studying the territorial structure of industry by estimating similarity of the area under study with the neighbouring territory. Two criteria are considered in this process: 1. the structure of industry as regards the number of different industrial branches; 2. the general level of development of industry. The latter includes the number of personel employed in industry or the total volume of production per 1 km2. The former criterion is defined by means of Pirson's correlation coeficient. The results of studies from all districts in an area serve as basis for the compilation of special maps in which territories of equal criteria are indicated by isopleths. The article brings many examples of such special maps, e. g. of Czechoslovakia, Poland and the German Democratic Republic together with their short analyses.
