Hydrographical Investigation of Northern Part of the Solnice Basin Near Rychnov Nad Kněžnou

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the possibilities of supply of water to underground horizons in the Cenomanian and Turonian sandstones and conglomerates of the Solnice Basin from the Zlatý potok (Goldene Brook) - starting from Dobruška it is called Dědina - which is a right-hand tributary of the Wild Orlice. The author measured different water levels of the Golden Brook and the river Bělá which is the nearest right hand tributary to the Wild Orlice. She compared the results with measurements secured on the brook Císařská studánka (Emperors fountain) supplying water to the public water-supply. This brook has the infiltration area in the drainage basin of the above two brooks in the area of the Cenomanian and Turonian deposits. In eight cases, the rise of the water level in the Emperor's Fountain (see graphs) was quite evident. On the basis of the abovementioned materials it becomes obvious that the main influence upon the fluctuation of the water level in this brook - situated on the margin of the Solnice Basin - is exercised by rain - and snow-precipitation as well as thawing. The individual cases are depicted in the graphs as follows: A - water level in cm on the Golden Brook near Chábory; B1 - temperature of atmosphere in °C; B2 - precipitation in mm; C - height of water level in the Emperor's Fountain. The opinion that there is a connection between the fluctuation of the water level in The Emperor's Fountain, and the differing volume of the Golden Brook, has not proved correct. It does not mean, of course, that the possibility of infiltration of the Golden Brook to the Cenomanian strata - supplying water to the Emperor's Fountain - should be completely exluded. I t has been ascertained that a simple technical contrivance - making the water in the vicinity of Masty swell up - does not exercise any direct influence upon the volume of the Emperor's Fountain. In this connection it is necessary to consider the fact that the strata of Cenomanian sandstones in the bed of the Gold Brook form only a narrow strip. Consequently, the increased overpressure for infiltration which takes place as a result of the rise of the water level is not - considering the distance of the Golden Brook to the Emperor's Fountain - so large as to influence the velocity of the volume. It might contribute to a more intensive supply of water to the Cenomanian horizon, and to the flooding of a further area in the Cenomanian zone. The above conclusion is also supported by figures ascertained in the measuring of the volume in the profile between Masty and Kvasiny where total loss in the infiltration area was same at high-water as well as low-water level.
