The Present State of Czechoslovak Cartographic Production

Ondřej Roubík

This paper gives a list of new cartographic works issued since the last congress of the Czechoslovak Geographical Society by the Central Office of Geodesy and Cartography (ÚSGK) which has concentrated all civil cartographic production in ČSR for several years now. At the same time, it informs us on the most up-to-date problems in cartographic production. Compiled according to the purpose they serve there are three main groups of maps: maps for economic development, school maps and maps for public use. To the first group belong topographical maps compiled in the scale of 1 : 10 000 and 1 : 5 000, detailed technical maps and cadastral maps (scale 1 : 1000, 1 : 2000, 1 : 5000), collections of maps of districts and roadways, administrative maps, plans of cities as well as thematic maps and atlases (e. g. aerial maps, Climatic Atlas of ČSR, navigator's charts, etc.). Also a Catalogue of Maps for Economic development is being prepared. The second group - the school maps - have been drawn for the purposes of schools. A series of school atlases had been agreed upon out of which two geographical and one historical atlas have appeared already. Another two atlases will appear before long. Also physical-political, economic and historical wall-maps, globes, plastical maps and other cartographic classroom means of instruction have been provided. The third group contains widely educational cartographical works, i. s. atlases for general use, political maps, astronomical maps for tourists and sportsmen. Thus The Small Atlas of the World was issued again as well as a collection of political maps, several tourist maps, city plans and a brand new edition of the Road Map of ČSR. Considerable success has been achieved in the compilation of astronomical maps. Also much attention has been paid to the preparation of facsimiles as well as the reproduction of preserved, older maps. Some of the main problems in terminology, which are expected to be solved by the Terminological Committee of the ÚSGK specially appointed for this purpose, are treated in much detail besides problems of proper reproduction of the surface of the terrain on maps making use of the photography of a plastic model; problems of proper compilation of tourist maps, methods of reproduction of economic maps, etc. In the conclusion information is given on the organisation of map production in ČSR, and an appeal is made to all scientific organisations, especially geographers, to lend a hand and cooperate more closely in further compilation of maps.
